About the Program

The Lane Kirkland Scholarship Program supports leaders and specialists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine by granting them scholarships for one year of complementary studies in Poland.

Kirkland Research Program

In September 2016 a new pilot path under the Kirkland Program called Kirkland Research Program was launched. It offers 4-months research and scientific internships for persons who already enjoy an established scientific position.

Lane Kirkland was born on March 12, 1922 in Camden, South Carolina. In 1948, after graduation, Kirkland started working for the American Federation of Labor (AFL).

The Kirkland Research Scholarships in Poland

in 2018
 

In the framework of the Kirkland Research Program, we offer a scholarship for one-semester research and scientific stay in Poland for people with a PhD degree with an established academic position.

o    Social science (Social Psychology, Sociology)
o    Political science and international relations

 

The candidates who are planning to return to their countries of origin after the scholarship program for the purpose of implementing the newly acquired knowledge therein are welcome to submit their applications.

The scholarship program is intended for the period from the middle of September till the end of January (1 semester). The elements common with the Kirkland Program include participation in the orientation and preparation program in September, held in two sessions for the grantees (December and January), and - optionally - in other classes and workshops organized for the grantees.

As part of the Kirkland Research, the grantees are obliged to participate in academic seminars and work individually under the supervision of their academic advisors to eventually write a diploma project. If the grantee's academic article is accepted for publishing by his/her academic supervisor and the grantee presents effects of his/her work during the meeting of the grantees in January, such grantee shall be entitled to obtain the Program graduation diploma.  

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
•    Citizenship and permanent residence in one of the targeted countries (holders of permanent residence card in Poland are ineligible)
•    Phd degree
•    Up to 40 years of age (in special cases up to 45)
•    At least 4 years of professional experience
•    At least two years between any previous foreign scholarships (lasting longer than 6 months) and your application
•    Polish language proficiency at least at the B2 level.
The offer is directed to people who did not participate in the Lane Kirkland Scholarship Program, have not completed doctoral studies in Poland or lectured at a Polish university.

 

FINANCIAL INFORMATION:
-    Monthly stipend for 4 months: 2000 PLN/month.
-    Accommodation in Poland during 4 months
-    Reimbursement of travel costs according to annual limits
-    Reimbursement of the local travel costs
-    Didactic package up to 3700 PLN
-    Health insurance for medical outpatient care, treatment costs in case of emergency and civil liability insurance
-    Participation in the orientation program and scholars conventions

 

SELECTION PROCESS:
Approximately 45 best individuals will be selected in a 3-stage evaluation process of candidates:
I.    Review of applications with regard to eligibility criteria
II.    Review of candidates’ proposed projects of study
by independent experts
III.    Interviews (planned on 30 March-30 April 2018)
The candidates advanced to the third stage will be notified by e-mail or phone. Information on the final nominations will be mailed to the candidates in June 2018.

 
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:
1.    Application form on-line
       a)    detailed personal questionnaire
       b)    proposed program of study in Poland explaining the purpose of participation in the Kirkland Program and including the future plans connected with its completion (not exceeding 4,000-6,000 characters with spaces)
2.    Two letters of reference (in Polish, English or Russian), describing the achievements and qualifications of the candidate as well as the expectations connected with the candidate’s further development and work in her/his professional or social field – to be submitted by e-mail
3.    Copy of the PhD diploma – to be submitted by e-mail

Application forms and relevant documents should be received by the Program Office no later than:
March 1, 2018
Applications received after the deadline will not be concidered.

 

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:
•    Inauguration of the Program (mid-Sept 2018)
•    Orientation (10 days)
•    Individual research and scientific work in one of the Polish academic centers: Warsaw, Krakow, Poznan, Wroclaw, Lublin (from October to January)
•    Preparation of the scientific article
•    Presentation of the scholarship's work during the scholars conventions in January 2019

How to complete the on-line application form

1. All boxes of the application form should be completed (in Polish or in English) in accordance with their description. Application form cannot be registered if all the boxes are not completed, neither if the project proposal does not include the required number of characters (4000-6000 characters are required).

2. You don’t have to complete the application form at once. You may save a working copy of application form (option „Save a draft copy”) and edit it later. Please write down your access code. After opening your draft copy with the access code (button „Open saved form”) you can edit the application and register the final version („Register this form”). After the action is completed you cannot change the data.

3. Once you “Register this form”, a PDF-format page opens to be printed. You should print it out, sign it, paste your photo and send it via regular mail to the Kirkland Program Office address: Al. Jerozolimskie 133, m. 56, 02-304 Warsaw, Poland.

Notice:

In connection with the appearance of the information about the commercial practices related to help in applying to participate in the Kirkland Program, the Program management hereby declares that it does not cooperate with any individuals or companies that carry out similar practices.

Granting and use of paid help in the process of applying to the program is contrary to the principles of the Program. And people who have benefited from such aid will not have any privileges in the process of selecting participants in the program.

In addition, the Kirkland Program never granted and is not planning to grant permission for the commercial use of any information materials published within the framework of the Program or interviews with the members of his team.

The Program Executive Team consider it clear that the program of study prepared by applicant not independently can not be the basis for applying for a scholarship.

 
 
kirkland fajneThis year 390 candidates competed for the Kirkland Scholarship:  309 from Ukraine, 22 from Belarus, 16 from Russia, after 11 Kyrgyzstan and Armenia, 9 from Moldova, 5 from Georgia, four from Kazakhstan and 3 from Azerbaijan.
 
After checking the formal criteria 345 candidates were qualified for the second stage - the expert evaluation. After the third stage of recruitment - interviews, 45 people were qualified to participate in the Program in 2015-2016.

Competition for Lane Kirkland Scholarships in the academic year 2016-2017 has been settled.

Qualified are 44 people: from Armenia - 2, Azerbaijan - 2 Belarus - 8, Georgia - 3, Kazakhstan - 1,

Program Administrator

 Leaders of Change Foundation was established in February 2016 with the aim to coordinate the two acting for years, programs of Polish-American Freedom Foundation – the Lane Kirkland Scholarship Program and the Study Tours to Poland Program. Both programs are international in nature and combines them similarity of target groups, giving the opportunity to develop cooperation and the scope of action in the future.

Program Founder

The Foundation was established by the Polish-American Enetrprise Fund organized following the Support for the East European Democracy Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 1989.
